Although the use of cellphones while operating an automobile was outlawed in Britain in 2003, it’s estimated that “half a million motorists flout the ban each day.”

Today’s Telegraph has an article about a new British initiative intended to curtail the dangerous practise of using a cellphone while driving (’Drivers who use mobile phones face jail‘; Telegraph; 2007/12/20).

It’s believed that part of the reason for that is because “existing guidelines restricted prosecutors to pursuing only a charge of careless driving, for which the maximum fine is £5,000 along with up to nine points on a motorist’s licence.”It’s hoped that drivers will start to take the law more seriously now that “drivers could be charged with dangerous driving, which carries a maximum sentence of two years in jail.”
