Proposed Signage Deserves Scrutiny
It would be nice to be able to know with certainty when the bus that you’re waiting for will arrive. But given the inept way in which LTC provides service, do you trust the LTC to get it right?

Date: Sun, 15 Feb 2009 10:33:37 -0800 (PST) From: Gregory Fowler Subject: Proposed LTC Signage To: Bruce Henry Cc: Nancy Branscombe Mr. Henry, With respect to the 2009/02/14 Living In The City notice that the 2009/03/02 Planning Committee will be asked to consider “a request by the London Transit Commission to amend the Sign and Canopy By-law allow for Automated Vehicle Communication and Location signs on the City Road allowance adjacent to their stops.” The continued proliferation of urban signage constitutes a danger that we should all be aware of and concerned about. The distraction of drivers by static signs is bad enough, but the risk posed by the increased number of digital displays is undoubtedly much worse. Although I support efforts by the LTC to improve customer service, I worry that the placement and direction of their signs may become another unnecessary driver distraction. What information is available about the LTC proposal? Has the city or the LTC carried out any background studies about the implementation of similar signage in other municipalities, specifically with respect to the impact upon traffic safety? Has this proposal been vetted through the Community Safety & Crime Prevention Advisory Committee (because of it’s responsibility re pedestrian safety) and the Transportation Advisory Committee? If so, what positions were adopted by those advisory committeess. And if not, why not? Respectfully, Greg Fowler |
