Police Release – Theft From Vehicles

On Wednesday February 18 2009 at 4:17 am a citizen observed a suspicious male believed to be breaking into vehicles in the area of Timber Drive and Camberdale Place and contacted Police. Police arrested the male in the area of Springbank Drive and Kernohan Drive. The male was searched and a large quantity of stolen property was found on his person. At this time owner(s) of the recovered stolen property are unknown. We are asking for the public’s assistance if anyone has had their vehicle broken into and property stolen in the Byron area to contact Police to report their stolen property.

Martin Moore, 32 years of London is charged with possession of stolen property.

Theft from vehicles is a continuous problem that can be prevented. Last week London Police had 110 reports of vehicles being broken into and items stolen from within. This continues to be a problem and occurs from all areas of the City. Most of these crimes occur due to the opportunity that is provided for the criminal to commit the offence. Prime locations for this type of crime are parks, arenas, sports complexes, athletic facilities, and restaurants. Offenders will watch these locations and observe your actions. You must always plan ahead to avoid becoming a victim and this can be accomplished by keeping the following crime prevention tips in mind;

· Never leave valuables visible in your vehicle. Secure items out of sight. This should be done prior to arriving at your destination. A prime example of this is laptop computers, GPS units and ipods left in vehicles when attending restaurants.

· Never secure your wallet or purse in the glove box or trunk. Fraud related crimes result when offenders steal credit cards and debit cards. This type of crime often goes unnoticed initially as there is minimal damage to your vehicle and only specific ID is removed.

· Watch for suspicious persons when you arrive at the mentioned locations. Report any such individuals immediately to site management, security, or police.

    Thanks for reporting this. I had a break in attempt (could have been successful) on my truck last night. Nothing was stolen, it seems, so perhaps the event was interrupted.

    In any case, good advice.

    My car was broken into on Wed night also. It was parked in the core. There was nothing of real value to steal but I guess the school bag, and tote bag looked tempting enough to warrant smashing the window. From now on I will be tucking anything that looks like it may be of value away. The guy who fixed my window said there have been a number of break ins in that area lately.

    I still feel quite violated and upset by the experience.
