Infrastructure Funding Announced

For Release – June 5, 2009

Residents of London will immediately benefit from federal and provincial infrastructure funding of almost $100 million as announced today by Member of Parliament Ed Holder and Member of Provincial Parliament Khalil Ramal. MPs Joe Preston, Glen Pearson and Irene Mathyssen and MPP Chris Bentley were also in attendance for the large Infrastructure Stimulus Funding announcement.

The 42 project funding announcements (see attached list) are great example of all three governments’ commitment to stimulating the Ontario economy through the creation of jobs in our communities through local road infrastructure, wastewater infrastructure, municipal buildings, parks and trails.

These projects will improve transportation efficiency, support a healthier environment and enhance local facilities and services while creating local jobs. They will address immediate needs as well as provide for legacy projects which will benefit Londoners for years to come. The projects will improve our communities and our business competitiveness.

“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, and through the work of local MPs, our Government is getting shovels in the ground and flowing money faster to stimulate the economy and create jobs for Londoners,” said MP Ed Holder. “Thanks to the strong relationship between all governments, we are working together to help London’s economy.”

“Under the leadership of Premier Dalton McGuinty, Ontario is leading the way,” said MPP Khalil Ramal. “We are creating jobs and the decisions announced today will soon lead to improved transportation and enhanced facilities and services in our community. Our governments are working together to modernize infrastructure – creating a competitive advantage that attracts business and strengthens our economy today and into the future. The impact of this money will be felt today and for many years to come.”

London Mayor Ann Marie DeCicco-Best said, “We thank the other levels of government for partnering with the City of London on these projects, and are thrilled that the bulk of the projects we put forward were approved for funding. Combined with the gas tax funding and several other provincial and federal funding programs, this represents a huge investment in jobs and will boost our local economy.”

These investments in jobs total almost $100 million for London. The governments of Canada and Ontario will jointly invest up to $64,605,990 in the projects. The City of London will contribute the balance of the total eligible project cost of up to $30,329,010 bringing the total funding package to $96,910,000 over two years.

The announcements today are part of many taking place across the province and their combined economic impact will be immediate. Projects receiving funding must be substantially completed by Spring 2011.
