Abandoned Buildings Targeted For Enforcement

The Corporation of The City of London
June 11, 2009
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

In direct response to the recent rash of fires being set in abandoned buildings throughout the city, the City of London is ramping up its efforts to address the enforcement of property condition standards and better protect the public.

Municipal Enforcement Officers and Property Standards Officers will be proactively attending at the sites of known abandoned buildings citywide, and issuing immediate property standards compliance orders to building owners. These orders could include instruction to board up derelict buildings and clean up properties.

The normal compliance period of 14 days will be reduced to 5 days, in an effort to further immediate response from property owners.

“Recent events have made it necessary to focus our efforts on building conditions and property standards maintenance,” says Orest Katolyk, Manager of Bylaw Enforcement. “Our priorities have been shifted and we are prepared to go after negligent property owners full-bore.”

The City of London Property Standards By-law CP-16 details the requirements of property owners to maintain and repair both occupied and vacant buildings.

Residents wishing more information or seeking to report bylaw issues should do so by calling 519… during business hours.
