Advisory Committee Appointments

The report of the 2008/08/10 Planning Committee meeting discloses a request by EEPAC (the Environmental and Ecological Planning Advisory Committee that is very troubling to me.

It’s not the request of the citizen committee that’s troubling, but the failure of the City to respond to such a no-brainer in a timely fashion.

It seems that as long ago as April 2007, a request was made that a number of very reasonable recommendations be considered with respect to soliciting/selecting candidates for membership on advisory committees and on Boards and Commissions. (to read the recommendations, see the EEPAC’s 8th report)

The (recommendations) provide the minimum level of transparency essential in promoting and facilitating citizen involvement and engagement within London as a community…

EEPAC’s request for an update was very civilly worded. And the report of Planning Committee simply says that “Civic Administration BE REQUESTED to provide an update…

I’m not sure that I’d have been so polite.

An advisory committee shouldn’t have to wait +2 years to get a response about it’s recommendations, especially when those recommendations address something as important as citizen engagement.
