Various components of London’s most disadvantaged demographic have made repeated requests for an LTC subsidy without having much success. The issue is currently being examined again by the CSCP committee and a public participation meeting is planned.

In his 2009/11/16 report to the Environment & Transportation Committee, David Leckie (Director of Roads & Transportation) states that “snow clearing is a debate that takes place in all Canadian cities.” Which explains why in this province, the Ontario Good Roads Association commissioned a task force to review the province’s existing Minimum Maintenance Standards for roads. It in turn commissioned a sub-group to develop a best practice for sidewalk winter maintenance. According to Mr. Leckie’s report, that group “concluded that there is no single standard to recommend, because climate and diversity of approaches across municipalities create too great a variation.”
Mr. Leckie explains that in London “We do all sidewalk maintenance and have adopted our own standards for doing so. The only exception is our downtown area, where the shop owners are expected to do that maintenance.” Continue Reading
The Ontarians With Disabilities Act 2001 requires every municipality to have an Accessibility Committee. It further requires every city to create an accessibility plan for each new year, and to consult with it’s Accessibility Committee about that plan. Continue Reading
The Ontario Liberals have shut down the public hearings on McGuinty’s widely-criticized bill to weaken the Human Rights Commission, and there’s an article in today’s paper (”McGuinty’s rights bill betrays a trust”; David Lepofsky; Toronto Sun; 2007/11/26) by an AODA Alliance rep which puts the issue in perspective.
